Louis is a 2 year old mixed breed dog who lived with a homeless person until he was a year old and landed at the shelter. Since then he has been in a foster home. He weights about 80 lbs, but really needs to lose a couple lbs. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, house trained and crate trained and ready for adoption!
Child appropriate? Louis would do fine with children over the age of 10 who can respect his space and not overwhelm him. He is very fun and playful with kids but he doesn't love kids grabbing his bones or toys from him and smaller children may not understand this.
Other dog appropriate? Louis is pretty dog selective so he may do best as the only dog. He is very chatty, which is very common for American Bulldogs and we believe him to be a AB mix. He bark-talks a lot and this can intimidate some dogs. He has meet several larger dogs and it has not gone well. He is not aggressive at all and does fine going on walks with other dogs but he prefers dogs to give him space and not get in his face. He might do well with a small, easy going dog, but larger dogs have not worked out well as he either scares them or they scare him.
Cat appropriate? Louis did ok on his cat test at the shelter but since living in his foster home his foster mom says he watches the cat and will chase it if given a chance. He either needs a kitty free home or a home with an outside cat or a home where there is a very dog savvy cat and the owners know how to handle the situation. He does not appear to want to harm the cat, just chase it :)
How is he/she with strangers? Louis does fine meeting new people and really likes them. He is friendly and will even bark hello!
What is his/her play style? Louis likes to run around and get energy out but he is very polite in play. He doesn't jump up or on you and he tires pretty quickly. He really enjoys playing tug and interacting in that way. He enjoys playing with his toys and bones the most. He will run around the yard or play with the hose and do silly things like that but his play style is very mellow.
Does he/she like toys? Yes, he LOVES toys!! He loves stuffies but he likes to destroy them so he'll need a steady supply :) He loves his bones too and any other toys. He doesn't discriminate!
Does he/she like water? He loves to play in the hose and try to drink out of it and doesn't mind walking through puddles etc...but has never gone to a lake or body of water so we aren't sure about that.
Does he/she like car rides? He seems fine riding in the car and quietly lays down.
Exercise level needed? Louis needs a moderate amount of exercise. He would enjoy daily walks around the neighborhood or hikes but he isn't much of a jogger past 2 miles. He is a bigger, stockier boy so he's no gazelle! Playing chase in the yard or playing tug with his toys is sufficient too. He is a very good dog for someone with a mellower lifestyle who just likes to take their dog for a walk.
Behavior issues? Louis has a tendency to resource guard his food and bones, things that are high value. This is very easy to manage as he is fed in his crate and left alone while eating. When done, he is let out of his crate and then his bowl is picked up. When he is given a bone, he needs to be left alone to chew it. We never understand people who feel it is necessary to be able to take bones or things from their dogs in some form of dominance. We feel it's totally acceptable to leave them alone while they eat or enjoy a bone and all is well. No need to create an issue. Louis pulls on leash too and he can be hard for a small person or older person to control so he does need continued work with this behavior. He can also be a bit bratty and bark/talk at other dogs when he sees them but he's very easily distracted by a treat so it's not really a major issue.
Medical issues? None known.
Skills? Louis knows basic commands such as "sit" and "off" and "down" but he is very, very treat motivated so he can learn tricks easily!
Special/endearing things? Louis is a very chatty dog and we find this incredibly endearing! He will talk back to you and occasionally yell over to people or other dogs and he has the cutest single eyebrow ever! He is utterly adorable and clumsy! He is not graceful and will lose balance when running zoomies but for a chubby boy, he can get some speed! He is very, very sweet and he loves his people. He has spent the first two years of life either without a home or in a temporary one and we'd really like him to finally "be home".
Ideal home: Louis' ideal family would be people who do not have any other pets, or just ones that are described above, who can take him on daily walks, let him ‘help’ with the cooking in the kitchen, and relax with him on the couch at the end of the day :) He would do well as a house dog and not a dog where the family wants to bring him absolutely everywhere because he's much too lazy to care about traveling the world! A low-maintenance family would be best as Louis really enjoys the simple things in life like a couch and love, and we can't say we blame him!
