Interested in adopting from us?
All the dogs in our care come to us from kill lists at local shelters. We do not pull dogs who are adoptable from a shelter. We only take in dogs who are labeled "rescue only" and have been passed over by other rescues. We take the forgotten dogs, the ones left behind. Our organization focuses efforts on saving dogs from local shelters who have failed their behavior evaluations due to one reason or another. Some of the dogs are simply fearful. Some of the dogs have resource guarding issues. Some of the dogs do not do well with other dogs. Some of the dogs passed their behavior evaluation but then developed kennel stress due to shelter conditions and their behavior has declined. Some of the dogs have been returned after adoptive families have failed to meet their needs and behavior issues developed in the home. All of these dogs deserve a chance.
Occasionally we accept a dog as an owner surrender or pull a special case such as a dog with a disability or a senior dog. While we stay as true to our mission as possible, we do occasionally make exceptions for special dogs needing specialized care.
Almost all of the dogs we save are large, mixed breed dogs. Rarely do we have small dogs as most often these dogs are not in jeopardy of being killed because their size makes them manageable and there are more homes wanting small dogs then large dogs. We rarely have puppies because again, these are some of the first dogs pulled by other rescues. On occasion we will take in a puppy but it will always have special needs or it will be a momma dog who is stressed at the shelter and needs safety in a foster home.
We place our dogs in trained, qualified foster homes. We no longer accept fosters who have not fostered before or who have limited dog experience. We have found that while good intentioned, these homes rarely have the ability to manage a dog with special needs. We are 100% foster based so it is important to find foster homes who are willing and able to provide for the dog for the duration of it's time prior to adoption because we have nowhere for the dog to go if the foster changes his/her mind.
We obtain professional training for any dog with behavior issues that require extensive training. We either pay for day treatment or full time board and care. For dogs with minor issues, we implement a positive based behavior modification plan in the home. Once the dog is deemed adoptable by us and our trainers, we place it up for adoption. Most of the time our dogs are not perfect and we disclose any and all behavior issues to adopters. We feel all our dogs are adoptable and it's just a matter of finding the right home who will meet the needs of the dog. None of us are perfect so why are we looking for a perfect dog?! All dogs are cat, child and other dogs tested to ensure they go to the right home. We believe these dogs lives matter and that with patience, kindness, consistency and care, they can go on to become loving family members in a variety of homes.
